Abstract : The electron beam fluorescence technique was used to measure the vibrational temperature of molecular oxygen, the number density of molecular and atomic oxygen, and the rotational temperature of molecular nitrogen at the exit of the 19-inch conical nozzle of the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory 2-Foot Electrogasdynamics Facility. Tests were conducted at reservoir pressures of 250, 350, and 500 psia with reservoir enthalpies varying from 2300 to 7200 Btu/lb. Theoretical results assuming finite rate chemical nonequilibrium were compared with the experimental data. At the 350 and 500 psia operating points, the theoretical results over-predict the O2/O concentration ratio while at the 250 psia point the theory underestimates the ratio. The rate of vibrational relaxation of molecular oxygen was found to be higher than that for molecular nitrogen with the O2 vibrational temperature relaxing only to 40% of the reservoir temperature. Possible causes for the discrepancies in the concentration data were examined. (Author)
