Abstract : Establishing a relationship between the velocities of elastic waves and both elastic and residual deformations can be used in the prognosis of earthquakes. In order to study the velocities of elastic waves during the deformation of rock samples under triaxial state of strain, laboratory tests were furnished for the compression of samples under confined pressures. During the tests the stresses, deformations and velocities of longitudinal waves were measured. Tests were run on cylindrical samples with the ratio of the height to the diameter at 2-3. Subject to testing were basalts, granites, syenites - the most typical rocks comprising the earth's crust, as well as marble which can be easily deformed plastically.
