Abstract : The report discusses the recent development of a family of lipid substances, prostaglandins, and reviews their pathophysiological roles and therapeutic applications. In spite of the current chaotic state of the physiology and pathophysiology of prostaglandins, nobody can deny the biological potency and therapeutic (abortifacient) action of prostaglandins. Many workers are currently engaged in studying the elucidation of the physiological roles of prostaglandins in healthy individuals, and to ascertain the pathophysiological roles in patients with different diseases. Many pharmaceutical companies are giving their best efforts to find more potent and specific prostaglandins and their inhibitors which have greater therapeutic index than the ones currently available.
