Abstract : TTER RECEIVERS, INFRARED DETECTORS, OPTICAL EQUIPMENT, WIRING DIAGRAMS, PERFORMANCE(ENGINEERING)*LASER COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, CARBON DIOXIDE LASERSThe report summarizes work performed from September 1971 through December 1972, a 1-year effort to design, fabricate, and test an experimental 10.6 micrometer laser communication system. The system consists of a transmitting terminal and a receiving terminal which provide a simplex 5 Mbit/sec data channel over a 5-mile terrestrial path with an error rate of 10 to the minus 6th power in all except the most severe weather conditions. The system utilizes intracavity electro-optic modulation with a frequency shift keying format and optical FM heterodyne detection using a mercury-cadmium-telluride (HgCdTe) detector operating at 77K. The details of the system design and performance over a nominal 5-mile path and a 20-mile path are given. (Author)
