Abstract : RX720 alloy, nominally 6.75%Zn, 2.5%Mg, 1.2%Cu and 0.12%Zr, has been evaluated in the form of 3 inch plate and 8 inch x 9 inch cross section hand forgings. Commercial plants were used for both the rolling and forging of the laboratory cast ingots. After various aging practices were evaluated in terms of strength and electrical conductivity, a few were chosen for the final evaluation. These materials were then evaluated and compared to the minimum goals of K sub (1c)=35 sq root of ksi in, a 25 ksi stress corrosion threshold for the short transverse direction and a fatigue strength equivalent or superior to 7075-T6. These goals were to be achieved at yield strengths of 72 ksi for 3 inch plate and 63 ksi for an 8 inch forging. (Author Modified Abstract)
