Abstract : Some of the limitations of detecting tactical targets with the unaided eye in high speed low flying aircraft are investigated. The situations selected are those frequently encountered in the European theatre during the winter months, up to and including the mid-day time period and during the summer months in the morning or evening hours. As explained in the first section of this report, even a detailed search cannot provide an accurate prediction capability without specific boundaries for the environmental situation. In the report one case of a slant range field of view from low-flying aircraft (F-4C) is investigated in regard to the minimum contrast ratio required between a target and its immediate environment in order that it be detectable by the airborne observer.
