Abstract : The manual presents a tutorial discussion of error protection techniques for data communications. Chapter 1 presents an introduction to information theory and, in particular, the noiseless and noisy coding theorems discovered by Shannon. Chapter 2 presents a survey of basic modulation/demodulation techniques. Chapter 3 discusses the physical error producing mechanisms of communication channels and the limitations of various media to the transmission of data. Chapter 4 surveys the major classes of error control techniques and discusses numerous specific error control codes. Chapter 5 considers the timing and synchronization problems that must be considered when error control coding is introduced into a system, e.g., the problem of obtaining codeword synchronization with block codes. Chapter 6 presents a survey of published performance results for various error control techniques and outlines a coding selection methodology. Chapter 7 gives an historical survey of error control coding and a state-of-the-art summary of error control. Finally, a glossary of the important terms encountered in the field of error protection is given.
