Abstract : An experimental model for predicting the stress distribution in symmetric angle ply composites has been developed. This model was developed in order to determine the three dimensional effects for uniform axial loading of a tensile specimen. Scattered- light photoelasticity was used as the experimental technique to determine the stress distributions. The particular example was a two layer laminate with a bias angle theta = + or -15 degrees. However, techniques used in casting a two layer model can easily be extended to composites made of several layers. A numerical integration procedure was developed which would be applied to mixed boundary value problems. This procedure was used in the solution of the symmetric angle ply composite. The experimental results indicate that the stress distribution is uniform stress distribution. The generalized plane stress assumptions seem to be valid at sections that are not near a free edge. This suggests that the effects of holes or any other edge effect is an exceedingly complex problem. Also, theories of failure must consider the effect of the free edge. Therefore, the free edge effect must be considered in detail and the experimental technique can be utilized to gain a better understanding of this problem. Scattered-light photoelasticity coupled with some other optical techniques have been demonstrated to be effective experimental techniques applied to composite materials. (Author-PL)
