Abstract : ILES, KETONES, SYNTHESIS(CHEMISTRY)PBI POLYMERSThe development of a high-temperature aromatic polyheterocyclic resin system that can be used instead of phenolic in future ABM applications is discussed. Four existing polymers, polyquinoxaline, polyphenyl- quinoxaline (PPQ), polybenzimidazole (PBI), and phenolic were fabricated into carbon composites and preliminary screening was initiated, using test methods responsive to ABM requirements. All of the heterocyclic systems exhibited softening behavior at 1400 F with an attendant recovery in flexural modulus, due to pyrolysis of the matrix during testing. In the case of PBI and PPQ, improvement in flexural properties at 1400 F WAS OBSERVED WHEN THE COMPOSITES WERE SUBJECTED TO ADDITIONAL POSTCURE CYCLES. Izod impact and short beam shear data were obtained on all four polymers in composite form. (Author, modified-PL)
