Abstract : A preliminary study on the response of a cylindrical vessel to an underwater shock wave in shallow water has been made. The solution to the response of a cylindrical beam to an underwater shock wave in unbounded water, as presented by W. W. Murray, has been extended to include shock wave reflections from the surface and bottom of shallow water. Explicit analytical expressions are derived for both the pressure and the translational velocity of a cylindrical vessel responding to a shock wave in shallow water. Other effects that a shallow water environment has on a shock wave are discussed qualitatively to show the need for further study. (Author Modified Abstract)
