Abstract : Four severe thunderstorms were observed on a single day by the AFCRL 5.4-cm Doppler radar at Sudbury, Massachusetts. Quasihorizontal radial velocity information was used to construct maps depicting the mean within-storm flow at different elevation angles over a period of about 20 minutes. Well organized patterns in the velocity field showed either persistence or slow evolution in time throughout an appreciable range of height. The merits of this single Doppler method for the investigation of future outbreaks are discussed. (Author)
