Abstract : The effect of an increasing irrationality and disobedience of orders by a group leader up on the behavior and perception of his subordinates was investigated. Manipulation checks indicated how the leader was viewed as less rational, less humane, etc., as his irrationality in decision making increased. With increasing leadership disintegration, subjects were observed to attribute more potential blame to the leader but to credit themselves with group success. Bi-modal distributions of attitudes and other perceptual measures of the leader are obtained, suggesting potential individual difference moderator variables in leader perception. Suggestions for future research designs are made. (Modified author abstract)
