Abstract : G. Matheron and J. Serra have developed a novel theory and a device for studying geometric aspects of two dimensional sets which is of considerable interest to statisticians. A stationary random set, regarded as the union of subsets, is scanned at discrete points in a finite region D and the results stored in a computer. The theory indicates how programs should be written to estimate quantities like the 'size distributions' of the subsets (granulometric properties) and their mutual relationships (structural properties). The object of the paper is to provide an introduction to this work which may have a wider significance. (Modified author abstract)
