Abstract : The development of minicomputers as a form of automation and control is traced and the recent trends toward use of such devices in hostile environments is emphasized. The recent introduction of military specification minicomputers is covered in detail. Programmable controllers are a spin-off of the computer field to cover certain industrial applications in difficult environments and are programmable in the users language. With the development of large scale integration techniques in semiconductors, tailor-made micro computers are economical for mass produced control systems. Thanks to industrial pressure the computer control field has made rapid progress toward economy and durability. Application to common military devices is near at hand. (Author)
