Abstract : The basic question is whether the Army National Guard can attain and maintain a readiness posture that would enable it to respond to a mobilization call in support of the Strategy of Flexible Response. The essay presents a survey of the responsiveness of the Militia/Army National Guard to the National Strategy from the Revolutionary War to the present with particular focus on the responsiveness to the Flexible Response Strategy during the Sixties. An analysis of the readiness posture of the contemporary Army National Guard is drawn with conclusions that the Army Guard will be able to response to the National Strategy providing that personnel manning does not develop into a major constraint.
