Abstract : Data on the dispersion of clouds of tracers in the atmosphere, as a function of time after injection, are presented for a variety of altitudes from the planetary boundary layer up to turbopause; these data supplement the compilations of Hage (1964) and Hage et al (1966). Within the admittedly wide range of variability of these data, there is no evidence that the behavior for the horizontal dispersion differs between the planetary boundary layer, troposphere, and lower stratosphere. The data show the effective, horizontal eddy diffusivity as being scale-dependent. Results for the lower atmosphere (0-30 km), for the upper atmosphere (80-110 km), and for the ocean near the surface are compared. (Modified author abstract)
