Abstract : Experimental and theoretical studies were carried out on acoustic instability during combustion of solid propellants. Experimental tests were made with a conventional T-Burner and with a Quarter-Wave Burner. Special configurations of the T-Burner were used to provide information relative to the dissipation or amplification of acoustic energy by the mean flow field. Measurements were made of the rate of growth of acoustic pressure amplitudes and high speed photographs were taken of the burner plume. These tests indicate that mean flow from burning surfaces parallel to the acoustic field produce a stabilizing effect. Conventional T-Burner data for five different propellant formulations are reported. (Modified author abstract)
