Abstract : Among the many problems of TV news, and perhaps the most significant of all, is the conflict--the distrust and credibility gap--between the press and the Government. The conflict has reached a serious stage where freedom of the press is in jeopardy. There has been a noticable hardening of opinion by both the public and the Government, calling for more stringent controls over the broadcast medium. Unless significant steps are taken to turn the tide of this opinion and reestablish harmony and good will among the trilogy, the people's right to know may likely be left in the hands of the Government--perhaps a dangerous and undemocratic location. Faults are identified, performance standards are stated, and solutions for the reestablishment of harmony are suggested. (Modified author abstract)
