Abstract : The environment has a variety of effects on man's task performance, noise, lighting, and temperature being the major variables. Although noise has usually been associated with performance decrement, the need to keep a visual inspector alert on a monotonous task has led to an investigation in which noise is used as a vigilance stimulator. The report deals with both types of effect as determined in a series of visual monitoring tests.
