Abstract : The report consists of two reprints. One reprint is of a technical note that describes a suggested modification to the Nb-C phase diagram to indicate the formation of Nb2C by a peritectic reaction of NbC (s) and Nb (1). The second reprint is of a paper on the impact of solidification research on metals processing. Two major fundamental concepts of the solidification process are reviewed, briefly, and the recent efforts to develop new casting techniques based on these models are mentioned. One major concept describing the conditions to maintain a plane front interface provided the background for growth of metal single crystals and low defect semiconductor materials. Recent efforts have resulted in the growth from the melt of composite materials and transparent ceramics. The second major concept describing the morphology and solute redistribution in the dendritic freezing of alloys has led to a better understanding of microsegregation, macrosegregation, inclusions and grain structure.
