Abstract : An investigation is being conducted to study the synergistic effects of thermal treatment and explosive shock loading on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Udimet 700 and Inconel 718. The influence of such shock thermomechanical processing (TMP) is compred with that of thermal processing alone and of conventional TMP by cold rolling to a recuction equivalent to the transient shock strain. Shock TMP of Udimet 700 led to improvements in tensile strengths at testing temperatures up to 1400F, tensile ductility, toughness, stress-rupture life at 1200 and 1400F, and microstructural stability. Room- temperature strength and toughness of Inconel 718 were increased due to shock TMP. (Modified author abstract)
