Abstract : The conditions for the existence of unstable or internal waves in a stratified, non-viscous jet stream and the dependence of the wave parameters (growth indices included) on the temperature-wind stratification are studied. The form of the stability boundary is found as a function of wavelength and Richardson number. It is considered that the unstable waves in this scale range can serve as a source of energy for turbulent motions. The results are in agreement with experiment. (Modified author abstract)
