Abstract : In the course of an investigation of the structure and mechanical properties of electro-deposited iron foils about 25 micrometers in thickness, optical micrographs of cross-sections of foils deposited over a range of current densities revealed a structure consisting of columnar grains perpendicular to the substrate and traversing almost the entire thickness of the foils. Electron transmission micrographs of thin film sections of the foils parallel to the substrate, and revealing the structure of the columnar grains in cross-section, showed that those deposited at low current densities contained many large grains, some of which had parallel rows of dislocations near the grain boundaries. The foils deposited at low current densities had a (112) fiber texture in the direction of columnar growth. Those deposited at high current densities had a fairly strong (111) fiber texture and contained small columnar grains with polyhedral cross-sections, some in the form of fairly regular hexagons with grain boundaries parallel to (112) faces. Adjacent hexagonal grains were twin-related. Many of the polyhedral columnar grains contained a central cluster of defects. (Author)
