Abstract : A preliminary analytic feasibility study has been made concerning the addition of stagnation enthalpy to the air flow of a hypersonic wind tunnel by volume energy addition using a high power (megawatts) CO2 laser. A model has been formulated on the basis of quasi one-dimensional, steady flow in a Laval nozzle with a collimated laser beam propagating in the downstream direction. Stagnation conditions on the order of 10,000K at 1,000 atm. are possible with 10% head losses. Heat transfer rate at the throat (50 kWatts/square centimeter) is the major limiting factor to successful operation. (Author)
