Abstract : Since the duty factor of these transmitters is relatively low, a rational approach to the generation of high peak power from otherwise limited power transistors, is to combine them in a circuit which converts their modest CW power into high peak power at low duty factor. This is accomplished by use of the Inverse Fourier Transform method in which a number of low power CW spectral components are combined to form pulses. Calculations show that eight 25-watt CW lines will produce 1600 watts of pulse power. A compact model was fabricated to show the feasibility of the IFT method. A fundamental difficulty was encountered in the design of the power combiner of the eight spectral lines. Severe test and evaluation problems resulted from low reliability transistors. In order to solve the fundamental difficulty a new class of power combiner must be developed which employs a high Q filter for each spectral line before summation to produce the high peak power pulses.
