Abstract : The optimal selection of the design of a supporting structure from a finite set of variants is examined as a strategic game between the designer and nature, in which the loss of the latter is minimized. Determining the optimal feasibility of individual designs reduces to a solution of the problem of linear programming, which is accomplished on an electronic computer. An example is presented of the selection of an optimal cross-section width for a beam under the effect of snow loading, deunification. (Author)
