Abstract : The completed fused quartz deep-sea pressure gauge, ready for ocean measurements, was subjected to high pressure, shallow, and deep water tests. The electronics pressure case was cycled twice to 9000 psi (6120 m H2O) and the lead-acid batteries were cycled once to 9000 psi. Neither showed structural defects. The complete assembly operating on power supplied from outside was subjected to pressures up to 9000 psi in steps and all functions were monitored continuously. All subsystems operated as design: the valve was closed at the highest pressure and the optical servo-system tracked for 3 minutes. A two-day shallow (fresh) water test followed. The temperature gauge and data acquisition system worked as designed. (Modified author abstract)
