Abstract : An analysis of an individual background survey determined which of 34 items were statistically significant for 376 men who had positions in general management. The survey was administered during the first of a two-year MBA (Master of Business Administration) course. Presence in general management was determined by a questionnaire five years after graduation. Fifteen items showed differences of 8% or higher. These appeared to include motivation to work, physical energy and an interest in social interaction. When combined with other questions, an instrument may be constructed that can be useful for the identification of general managers and for their development. (Modified author abstract)
