Abstract : Methods are proposed for the infrared determination of alkali carbonates by the pellet technique. Samples containing sodium and potassium carbonates are hygroscopic and must be ground with the potassium bromide in a dry box; samples containing lithium carbonate are not hygroscopic and do not require a dry box. The peaks recommended for sodium, potassium, and lithium carbonates are 881/cm, 1060/cm, and 1088/cm, respectively. Sodium carbonate can be determined in the presence of sodium nitrate or sodium sulfate, potassium carbonate can be determined in the presence of potassium nitrate or posassium sulfate, but lithium carbonate cannot be determined in the presence of lithium nitrate or lithium sulfate. Potassium carbonate can be determined in the presence of sodium carbonate, lithium carbonate can be determined in the presence of sodium or potassium carbonates, but sodium carbonate cannot be determined in the presence of potassium or lithium carbonates.
