Abstract : The acoustic pressure wave observed during testing of solid propellants in the T-burner combustor is characterized by a limit amplitude as well as by temporal growth and decay exponential coefficients for the fundamental mode of oscillation. The limit amplitude gives a measure of the degree of instability to which the combustor is being subjected. Reliable predictions of limit amplitude are therefore necessary as part of a diagnostic analysis of the propellant and combustor system. The scheme presented herein gives a prediction that is in accord with observed results. It makes use of a new nonlinear dissipation mechanism, based on entropy considerations, which reduces wave growth as pressure amplitude increases. The significance of harmonic effects is also included. (Author)
