Abstract : Project EXCEDE SWIR (Short Wave Infrared) consists of an electron accelerator and a number of optical and infrared sensors launched by a single rocket into an undisturbed (nonauroral) night atmosphere. The accelerator and sensors are oriented in a prescribed manner at approximately 100 to 110 km, and the electron source activated for a given beam-current-pulse magnitude and duration. The spectral, spatial and temporal nature of ultraviolet, visible and primarily infrared atmospheric emissions are measured by onboard sensors. Ground based instruments photographically record the spatial distribution of electron energy deposition in the atmosphere by imaging N2(+) first negative 3914A (0-0) emission. EXCEDE SWIR is designed to provide measurable NO emission at 2.7 and 5.4 micrometers and NO(+) emission at 2.2 and 4.3 micrometers to determine principal production mechanisms, reaction rates and infrared photon yields for electron-induced atmospheric processes at 100 to 110 km.
