Abstract : A technique using sidelight spectroscopy has been developed to obtain rotational temperatures and radial rotational temperature profiles in flowing gas discharges containing nitrogen similar to those used in gas discharge lasers. The experimental technique uses the relative intensities of the 3805A band of the second positive system of N2. Computer codes for obtaining both average temperatures and temperature profiles from chord wise scans of intensities have been developed. Preliminary results indicate the expected increase in temperature for increasing current and/or pressure for high nitrogen partial pressures. For lower pressures standing striations in the column appear to produce a marked local variation in longitudinal rotational temperature. Radial temperature profiles show an off axis temperature maximum as opposed to the theoretically predicted on axis maximum. (Author)
