Abstract : The goal of the research program was to supplement and enhance the capabilities of the Air Force Materials Laboratory in the analysis and characterization of exploratory materials. This goal was achieved through studies aimed at expanding the analytical utility of Raman and far infrared spectroscopy, the development of new techniques for spectroscopic analysis, and supporting research on analytical problems and analysis of unknown samples. The report briefly describes this research. Far infrared group frequencies for several classes of compounds were correlated and the usefulness of O-H and N-H torsional frequencies in providing new knowledge on intramolecular forces and chemical reactivity has been suggested. The evaluation of new instrumentation was a significant contribution of this program. The far infrared performance of an innovative Fourier transform spectrometer was tested and improved. The majority of the report presents characteristic Raman frequencies for various compounds.
