Abstract : Studies have dealt with the L-forms from the group A streptococci, a group of bacteria pathogenic for man, and with the morphologically related mycoplasmas. They included investigations at the cellular and subcellular levels using whole cells, isolated membranes and cell-free systems and entailed the use of all techniques incidental to microbiology, biochemistry and chemistry. From these studies has come a better understanding of fundamental physiological and structural similarities and differences between the group A streptococci and their L-forms, between these L-forms and certain mycoplasmas, and of a possible biochemical mechanism for explaining the survival of these osmotically fragile L-forms in vivo. The role of the L-form in pathogenesis, however, remains only speculative. (Modified author abstract)
