Abstract : The great success of the Vine-Matthews hypothesis in explaining magnetic observations at sea has led to the development of many computer programs for calculating the fields caused by two-dimensional block models. In this note the formulas for the fields due to a uniformly magnetized, two-dimensional body with an arbitrary polygonal boundary are derived. Using this formulation, a sample calculation is given, with a variable observation height. The formulation is somewhat shorter than the best-known previous derivations and allows the inclusion of a variable bottom topography.
