Abstract : Optical transitions between the quasistatic energy states of a solute organic dye are described using the coherent-interaction formalism. Expressions for the polarization and occupation state of a single molecule are averaged statistically to obtain rate equations for the absorption of light by an ensemble of molecules. The formalism developed in this report is used to describe spectral hole burning in organic dyes, as well as to investigate beam distortion that may arise during nonlinear attenuation. The formalism also leads to analytic expressions for the shape of organic-dye absorption and refractive-index spectra in terms of fundamental molecular parameters. An experimentally oriented chapter contains a review of past work on saturable absorption, and a description of research carried out in this laboratory on the ruby-laser Q-switch dye DDI. (Author)
