Abstract : In the course of some calculations on retinal energy density, it became necessary to know the pupil diameter in the human eye as a function of the luminance and distribution of luminance in certain adapting field configurations. The method developed for calculating the pupil diameter is based on the extensive theoretical and experimental results of H. Bouma, and is reported because it is considered applicable or adaptable to many of the situations that occur in experimental and theoretical physiological optics when the natural pupil is used.
