Abstract : The nature of the heterogeneity in a semi-killed mild steel plate and its effects on notch-impact and tensile properties are examined. The heterogeneity was of two types, one being on a micro-scale in the form of ferrite/pearlite banding and non-metallic inclusions elongated in the direction of rolling, and the other being on a macro-scale consisting of macro-segregation in the centre of the plate.
