Abstract : ), MAGNETIC FIELDS, DIFFUSION, NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS, SCIENTIFIC SATELLITES, WHISTLERS, THESESThe lifetimes of particles trapped in the earth's magnetic field are controlled by the different transport processes. Particles can diffuse across the magnetic field lines (i.e., radial diffusion) or along field lines (i.e., pitch-angle diffusion). Very few experimental determinations of the pitch-angle diffusion coefficients are available. This report experimentally evaluates the pitch-angle diffusion coefficients for 1.75 < or = L < or = 2.5. The Russian high-altitude tests of 28 October and 1 November 1962 injected large numbers of relativistic electrons into the plasmasphere. These electrons were observed by scintillation spectrometers aboard an Air Force satellite. (Modified author abstract)
