Abstract : A simplified model is presented for the heat transfer and subsequent temperature distribution in a thin metal target being impacted by a cylindrical projectile. The mechanism for the temperature generated is based on the linear Fourier law or diffusion assumption. An example of the transient temperatures in an aluminum target impacted by a steel projectile is given. The calculated temperature profiles are not in agreement with practical experience. It is concluded, based on this example, that this model is not appropriate for impact problems. A more refined model is suggested.
