Abstract : Air defense forces armed with systems ranging from a man-portable missile, the REDEYE, to the sophisticated high altitude, long range NIKE-HERCULES are deployed worldwide. These forces are for the most part theater air defense forces but some are organic to combat divisions. The air defense forces for field army and CONUS were examined. For CONUS the defenses are mostly static and in the field army they are mobile. Difficulties in achieving a homogeneity of doctrine, training, air materiel development priorities resulting from the multiplicity of commands were discussed. Discussion with many air defense officers and formal interviews with some were held. A precedent for a similar type organization in STRATCOM was shown. Three different alternative organizations were examined. (Modified author abstract)
