Abstract : Hydrocarbonoclastic microorganisms have been isolated from local beaches and secured from the American Type Culture Collection. The ability of pure and mixed cultures to degrade marine diesel, Bunker C fuel, and crude oil has been investigated. In general, mixed cultures are much more active than pure cultures. The influence of adding organic enrichment, e.g., yeast extract, inorganic salts, nitrates and phosphates and aeration have also been investigated and determined to be highly beneficial. (Author)
