A RECURRENCE RELATION IS DERIVED AND IS INCORPORATED INTO THE COMPUTER PROGRAM BASED ON THE DISPLACEMENT METHOD OF FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS. The optimum design procedure takes into consideration multiple loading conditions and displacement constraints on the structure. Several sample problems consisting of both isotropic and composite elements are solved and the results are presented. (Author, modified-PL)
