Abstract : The subject of the study is an analytical investigation of deformation modes in hexagonal metals. The specific topics treated are: stable Burgers vectors, dislocation interactions, and dislocation energy surfaces. The relationship of the results obtained to ductility (non-basal slip) and the formulation of a rationale for slip are discussed. Preliminary evidence is presented that efficient <c+a> slip is precluded a priori in beryllium. (Author)
