Abstract : The program is generally concerned with an understanding of how strong stress waves interact with discrete faults, randomly distributed faults, and tunnels in rock media. The study comprises both theoretical analyses and two-dimensional computer calculations of selected interaction problems. The current work includes: quantitative understanding of the detailed mechanisms involved when strong stress waves interact with explicitly-defined crack surfaces and tunnels in rock media. Of particular interest are cracks which are obliquely oriented relative to the wave front; and the propagation of stress waves in randomly faulted media.
