Abstract : A method for quantitative structural characterization of glass corrosion is developed using infrared reflection spectroscopy (IRRS) and corrosion solution analysis. Application of the IRRS method to structural analysis of the entire glass forming range of the alkali silicates is presented; analysis of suppressed immiscibility is discussed. Peak assignments based on this study provide a quantitative basis for corrosion analysis. X-ray diffraction analysis of structural changes accompanying corrosion of a potassium silicate glass compared with X-ray analysis of silicic acid structure and water in glass shows a vitreous silica gel surface structures. X-ray and IRRS analysis of neutron irradiated vitreous silica showed extensive disordering occurring. (Author)
