Abstract : The effects of age and cold exposure at 4 C for 6 weeks on the size and functional activity of the parathyroid glands of rats was examined. Mean absolute and relative gland weights increased with age and were consistently greater in cold-exposed than 22 C control groups. The functional activity of the parathyroid glands, as assessed by the uptake of AIB-1-14C, decreased with age, but was consitently higher, although not always significantly, in cold-exposed than control groups. Total serum calcium concentration decreased with age and tended to be lower in cold-exposed than control animals. The distribution of calcium between free and bound forms was altered with age, with more being shunted into the free or ultrafiltrable than the bound form. (Author)
