Abstract : A technique and equipment are described by means of which profiles of the sound-scattering strength of the volume between the surface and depths of as great as 1200 m are obtained. A broadband directional receiver with the beam directed upward is lowered below the maximum depth required and an explosive charge is thrown to explode somewhat deeper. Scattering is received from those layers that lie above the receiver. Frequency analysis and correction of the broadband record yield sound-scattering strength as a function of both depth and frequency. Presentation of the results as a contour diagram facilitates visualization of the scattering environment. (Author)
