Abstract : The Applied Research Laboratories, The University of Texas at Austin, was requested by Naval Ship Systems Command, PMS 302-243, to perform acoustic tests on samples of Grade GS MARBON CYCOLAC, an Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) material. The tests investigate the suitability of this material, in thicknesses of 5/16 in. and 3/8 in., for use as a sonar acoustic dome, at frequencies of 80 kHz and 350 kHz. Computer predictions using material characteristics of ABSONIC-A, also an ABS material, indicated satisfactory performance. These tests were used to verify computer predictions. With only minor deviations, expected results were achieved. It was concluded that 3/8 in. thick CYCOLAC exhibited the better performance characteristics at the two frequencies of interest. (Author)
