Abstract : Three equivalent forms of the optimum (maximum-likelihood) bit-by-bit nonlinear detector structure for binary signals with intersymbol interference in the presence of additive stationary Gaussian noise are given. Basic properties of this detector as functions of the complexity of the detector structure and of the observation time are studied. An analytically tractable tight approximation as well as specific numerical results (for a two-pole Butterworth filter transfer function) on probability of error are presented. For various observation durations the authors show explicitly the advantage of using the nonlinear receiver over either a conventional matched filter receiver or the optimum linear transversal filter receiver.
